So I My mom is teaching a class on nursing psychology. she asked me is there were any semi recent bands, group, singers, rappers, rockers that add social or political commentary in their music. I said I am sure that there are. but my list is coming up short. besides Rage against the Machine, and Mosh by eminem, can you think of any other artist or songs that have political or social commentary? help please!

Blessed Union of Souls- "I Believe" is a song about poverty and race relations...that kind of thing...and on top of that...beautiful.

I've been racking my brain for others...but everything I think of is old...older than Blessed Union of Souls....I know that there are others out there...But, that's all I have for now...I will try to think of some more and get Chad's help too :)

First of all, "I Believe" is from 1995 or something. Way old.

Currently: Green Day's most recent, award-winning album is entitled American Idiot, and is quite political. Additionally, check out "Wake Up" off of DMB's latest album, the newest Rolling Stones album, and the newest NIN album. NIN actually refused to appear on the MTV Music Awards because the song they wanted to perform involved an image of Dubya appearing on a screen behind them, and MTV balked on it. U2 doesn't necessarily involve political statements in their music, but they're very politically active. Finally, John Fogerty's "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" or something like that is a commentary, essentially on the war in Iraq. It's not completely clear, but I'd venture to say that the lyrics are attempting to parallel the current situation with Vietnam.

Whee!

thank you for you help guys. To clear some things up when I say old I am say like 80's, 70's,and 60's. 90's for the most part is ok. I am just looking for things that college students could relate to. secondly I am now looking for more social issues. I believe that I have enough political issues. some example of a social issue song would be something like what's going on, and Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) by marvin gaye. but these songs are way to old for what I am looking for. so thanks for you help again.
